This Week’s Exclusive Interview with Kat Contii aka @KatContii

This week’s exclusive interview is with the vibrant Katharine Conti aka @KatContii. Although Kat may consider herself new to the eSports world, she is best known for her Call of Duty skills and for being one half of the #CoDBestie duo. Kat was born in California, raised in Las Vegas and now resides in an all female gaming house. For those of you wondering, she’s Filitalian (part Filipino and part Italian) and adores her Xbox FPS games.

Thank you for your time, Kat.

What inspired you to get into gaming? Can you tell us a little bit about your gaming background?

-I’ve been playing video games ever since I was little. I can recollect playing such games as Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros on the NES. But I was mainly a Nintendo gamer growing up because I have 3 other sisters, and party games maxed at 4!
-Although what really got me into gaming, Xbox gaming, was my ex. I was that stereotypical girl friend who wondered why my other half wanted to play Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 rather than give me attention. So one day he handed me the controller and since then I couldn’t put it down.
-Twitch was a big factor in putting all my eggs in one basket. After watching several hours of gamers stream their gameplay, I knew that is what I wanted to do, game for a living.

Did moving around as a kid affect your interest in gaming?

-Going to 5 different elementary schools as a kid was a struggle, but gaming actually kept me sane. At one point in my childhood, though I don’t remember how long for, just that it was a short amount of time, I was a foster kid, and playing Super Mario N64 was an escape.

Which are your favorite games? What game left the biggest impression on you?

-My favorite game of all time is Luigi’s Mansion.

-Call of Duty

Who are your favorite video game characters?

-Luigi would have to be my all time favorite character because he is, in my opinion, an underdog, always being overshadowed by his brother & Yoshi. He is someone I can relate to because I am the Luigi of my family, my closest sister being Mario. We were constantly trying to “One Up” each other.

Which game or genre do you really like but are embarrassed to talk about?

-There are a couple things I’m a little embarrassed to talk about, the first being the fact that I am so late to the Shooter Realm. I love Call of Duty, but almost everyone in eSports came from another title, Halo, Gears etc. It’s a tad discouraging when people’s jaws hit the floor because I’m such a “noob”, but all I can do is just try to pick these games up as fast as I can.

-Another genre or game I am super embarrassed about is my love for word games. I quite enjoy games that actually pick my brain, such as Word Whomp and Anagram Magic.

What are your biggest and most personal accomplishments as a gamer?

-Being able to support myself through gaming.

Do you have a your gaming idol and if so, who is it?

-My idol would have to be my best friend/coworker, Kelly MrsViolence Kelley because she inspires me and no matter how dark a situation is, she is the light that always gets through. In my eyes, she is someone who I want to become, an idol, an inspiration, someone who uses a positive image and intelligence to get where she is at today.

What about CoD (Call of Duty) intrigues you?

-The mathematics & algorithms, just knowing how long it takes to cap a flag, how long it takes to run to one side of the map, where to be to spawn trap them, knowing where they are spawning, etc.

Which is your favorite weapon and map?

-Famas (Black Ops)

-Terminal (MW2), Summit (Black Ops), Dome (Mw3), Slums (Black Ops 2), Sovereign (Ghosts)

What is your signature move?

– My flying kick in my eeyore onesie

What was your longest CoD killstreak?

-24 (with my gun alone)

-28 (with streaks)

What is your favorite topic to talk about while streaming?

-Favorite topic would have to be how Kelly & I met.

If you could change anything in CoD, what would it be and why?

-Host Advantage. It’s an unfair advantage to who ever pulls host, especially when I have to play on what seems like a 1 bar connection.

What is it like living in an all female gamer house?

-Pretty much as amazing as everyone thinks it would be. I like to think of it as a Team house, but cleaner with a much more pleasant scent.

Which are your favorite Mario party games?

-Mario Medley & Bom-omb Breakers (mp4)

-Dinger Derby (mp5)

Which is your favorite Glee song?

-Don’t Stop Believing

-Teenage Dream (Acoustic)

Aside from softball, what are your other favorite recreational activities?

-Cliff Diving

Which is the best or craziest gift you’ve ever received from a sponsor or fan?

-South Park: The Stick of Truth & Stan, Kyle, Kenny, Cartman plushes

If you could play a real life version of a game, which would it be and why?

-Yu-Gi-Oh! The thought of bringing a card to life via holograms has always fascinated me.

If you could change anything from your gaming past, what would it be and why?

-This question is something I always ask myself. Should I have started gaming on an Xbox earlier? Should I have chosen a gaming PC instead of a laptop for school? What I have concluded from this recurring question is that I wouldn’t have changed anything. Who knows who I would be now if i discovered competitive gaming a decade ago as opposed to a year ago. Being a firm believer in, things happen for a reason and for the better. I don’t think I would have been given the opportunities that I have now, met the people I have become the best of friends with, and been accepted into the community so fast if i would have discovered eSports years ago.

Is there any advice you’d like to give to future gamers or streamers?

-My one and only advice for future streamers/gamers is be yourself. As cheesy as it sounds, if I wasn’t myself, I would probably still be working a 9-5 job and playing video games on the side.
